Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter/Tiger.

Hobby Master HA3315 is a 1/72 scale F-5 Tiger II diecast model aircraft. The F-5 tactical fighter is an American twin engined light supersonic fighter aircraft. The Northrop F-5A/B Freedom Fighter first flew in July 1959 and first entered service with the 4441st Combat Crew Training School USAF. Designed for the Military Assistance Program (MAP), it is an extremely maneuverable supersonic fighter, relatively inexpensive to purchase, easy to maintain, and capable of operating out of short runways.

On November 20, 1970, Northrop won the IFA (International Fighter Aircraft) competition to replace the F-5A/B’s. The emphasis was be on the air-superiority role. Initially designated as the F-5A-21, it was reclassified in January 1971 as the F-5E and became known as the Tiger II. It had more powerful General Electric J85-21 engines, lengthened and enlarged fuselage. Its wings were fitted with enlarged leading edge extensions, giving increased wing area and improved maneuverability. The aircraft’s avionics were more sophisticated and including radar (the F-5A and B had no radar). The last F-5’s was manufactured in 1989 and of the 2,600 plus produced, about two-thirds of these were still in service 4 decades later. The F-5 was manufactured under license in Canada, Taiwan, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and served with 26 countries.
